Sexual Recovery Groups for Men

Most people feel guilt and shame about addictive/compulsive sexual behaviors, which causes them to isolate rather than seek help. Attempts to restrict sexual behaviors through an exclusive focus on self-control may be counter-productive. In fact, such avoidance may lead to stronger feelings helplessness and desperation. Long term recovery involves a personal commitment to integrity, honesty, and learning how to form emotionally reliable relationships with others you can trust.

Group therapy is considered the most effective long-term treatment solution for sex addiction because it addresses these underlying intimacy problems. After establishing stability and a foothold in recovery, clients are often recommended to incorporate group therapy as part of their treatment.

Group therapy differs from individual therapy and 12-Step meetings in several important ways. In group therapy,

  • a clinician facilitates the group
  • questions and feedback are encouraged to enhance intimacy among group members
  • groups are capped at seven people for safety and stability
  • the same members attend from week-to-week to provide familiarity and reliability
  • task work may be assigned periodically to facilitate introspection and insight
  • group members are held accountable to commitments they make for their recovery
  • confidentiality and clear boundaries allow discussion of more sensitive topics
